Demolition begins at tornado-damaged church

The landscape of the tornado disaster zone changes with  the demolition of a church and school featured in many images of the Joplin disaster.

Demolition crews are now working to bring down the rest of St. Mary’s church and school walls.

Asbestos teams scrape up flooring and dispose of it in a special dumpster.

Visitors from Vietnam and others stopped to get their photo with the cross of the church that survived the tornado while two teachers looked for last finds in the rubble.

Father Justin Monaghan says it’s difficult to watch the demolition but says it’s a sign of progress.

“I’m happy to see it being cleaned up but it’s a – I have a tough time with it,” says Father Monaghan.  “I came over Monday, kind of planned this, came over in the morning because there would be no traffic - kind of walk around, shed my own tears, just kind of say goodbye to it.”

Students from St. Mary’s gathered at the school for a final picture early Wednesday evening. Father Justin says at this time the cross will stay — perhaps for a future memorial.
