Officers investigating shooting north of Mulberry

News release issued by Crawford County Sheriff’s Office

On July 5, 2011 at approximately 11:20 p.m., Crawford County Sheriff’s Office received a report from the Pittsburg Police Department of a shooting that may have occurred north of Mulberry, KS.

Pittsburg Police had attempted to stop a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed through Pittsburg.  The driver of the vehicle, identified as Jeffery Hunter, 23, of Pittsburg, was stopped at Via Christi Hospital.  A passenger in the vehicle, Harley Mitchell, 24, of Pittsburg, was found to be suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.  Initial information indicates that Jeffery Hunter shot Mitchell.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation.

The shooting occurred north of Mulberry near a strip pit located at 270th Street and 675th Avenue.  While en route to Via Christi Hospital, Hunter struck and sheared off a utility pole in the City of Mulberry.  He was later arrested at the hospital for traffic offenses including DUI and reckless driving.

Harley Mitchell’s medical condition is unknown at this time.
