Joplin schools hope to utilize Memorial Hall in fall

Joplin schools want to use Memorial Hall for the next school year. With Joplin High School and East Middle School damaged, the district hopes to contract with the City to use Joplin Memorial Hall for team practices and even games. The hall has a gym floor and can facilitate volleyball, basketball and PE classes. The city council will consider the proposal at its meeting tonight at 6PM.  Read More →

Schools host second pre-enrollment day for students

Area school districts hold another early enrollment today. The districts hope to get an idea of how many students will switch schools after the Joplin tornado may have forced moves. Five school districts surrounding Joplin hosted pre-enrollment sessions July 11th as well. Coordinators say pre-enrollment will help all districts in the area take a look at the impact the tornado had indirectly placed... 

Demolition begins at tornado-damaged church

The landscape of the tornado disaster zone changes with  the demolition of a church and school featured in many images of the Joplin disaster. Demolition crews are now working to bring down the rest of St. Mary’s church and school walls. Asbestos teams scrape up flooring and dispose of it in a special dumpster. Officials work to pay law enforcement overtime hours

The Joplin tornado meant extra hours worked for county employees, and at least one group of deputies haven’t gotten paid. Officers from 400 agencies helped with search and rescue and law enforcement after the May 22 tornado. The sheriff says deputies typically don’t get overtime pay but rather get comp time.  With so many hours that won’t work. Joplin will pay other agencies... 

Joplin voters to cast ballots at Northpark Mall

The Jasper County clerk wants to remind Joplin citizens to go the Northpark Mall to vote.  The mall will be the sole polling place in the upcoming election on August 2. Only one item is on the ballot the storm water sewer tax renewal issue. Pre-enrollment plans for Joplin students

Reported July 11, 2011 at 5:25 PM CST by Zach Fletcher:  Today five school districts surrounding Joplin hosted pre-enrollment sessions to see what the school population might be for the 2011/2012 school year. The Director of Special Services at Carthage School District, Deanna Yokley, said they are expecting any where from 20 to 200 students displaced by the tornado to be relocated to their district...
